How Fossils Form: From Ancient Life to Stone
Fossils feel almost magical, direct physical evidence of life that existed millions of years ago, but the process that creates them is actually quite specific, and most organisms that ever lived never became fossils at all.
Why Fossilization Is Rare
For an organism to become a fossil, it generally needs to be buried quickly after death, before scavengers, decomposition, or erosion destroy its remains. This is part of why fossils are far more common from organisms that lived in or near water, since sediment settling on a seafloor or lakebed provides exactly this kind of rapid burial.
Permineralization: The Classic Fossilization Process
One of the most common ways hard structures like bone, shell, or wood become fossils is through permineralization, where mineral-rich groundwater gradually seeps into the buried remains and deposits minerals within its microscopic pore spaces, effectively replacing organic material with stone while retaining its original shape.
Molds, Casts, and Trace Fossils
A mold fossil forms when an organism decays completely after being buried, leaving a cavity shaped like the original organism. A cast fossil forms when that cavity later fills in with new sediment or minerals. Trace fossils preserve evidence of an organism’s activity, footprints, burrows, or trails, rather than the organism itself.
Amber: A Different Kind of Preservation
Amber, fossilized tree resin, preserves organisms by trapping and sealing them before decomposition can occur, rather than through mineral replacement, which is part of why amber-preserved insects can show remarkably fine detail.
Why Fossils Matter Beyond Their Appearance
Fossils are direct evidence used to understand the history of life on Earth, the age of rock layers, and how ancient environments and climates looked. The specific type of fossilization, and the rock layer a fossil is found in, both carry information beyond the specimen’s visual appeal.
