Steiner Collectables exists because so many people who own or collect crystals, fossils, and gemstones were never taught the actual science behind them. Terms like “crystal habit,” “cleavage,” or “index fossil” get thrown around in collector circles constantly, but rarely explained clearly to someone just getting started.

This site is built to fix that. We write about the fundamental differences between crystals, gemstones, minerals, and rocks, how fossils form and what they can tell us about the past, and how to begin identifying specimens using observable properties rather than guesswork.

We write for hobbyist collectors building their first display case, students studying earth science or geology, and anyone who has ever picked up an interesting rock and wanted to actually understand it.
